Scat versus Eagle rotating assembly

In mentioning to my local machine shop guy about upgrading my 400 to a 461 using an Eagle rotating assembly (4.15 X 4.25), he suggested I consider Scat components instead. He said that Eagle doesn't grind their journals as close to the final dimension, and relies on polishing to get there, which can result in a smaller diameter in the middle of the bearing surface and larger diameter at the outside, which can cause premature wear or failure.

hello rolling67
I have experience with scat cranks on fords. no eagle cranks but yes on eagle rods. i like the rods for the price but that;s not your question.
at least 1/2 the scat cranks i got needed to be sent out to castillos crank to have them fixed. the radiuses, thrust clearance and or journal size was incorrect.
i don't understand if your builder is putting the crank on a crank grinder and polishing it or not but as he says polishing to remove more than the small grinding scratches will do exactly what he says it will. tis is why they are reground to size if they are that far off not polished .002 or so.
why don't you just do as he recommended, however i would research the cranks on line as far as material strength and us material certs ie composition and hardness tests] either has. they are still chinese after all.
unless you find anything negative about their reliability [breaking] here or online and you are nit putting 700 hp to it i would guess their ok.
any other questions on your build cam, heads etc?
sorry not much help.

That's correct. I've had much better luck with Scat stuff over Eagle, but I'm told the Eagle stuff has gotten better. Bottom line is everything needs to be checked. It's not out of the ordinary to have to grind a new crank .010/.010.
