hi everyone, trying to id what rear axle i have, looked this up on the internet, but makes no sense- the rear that is in the car has axles that are retained by the wheel bearings, ring gear bolts are 11/16" socket rh threads, car is a '68 gto, but i'm not sure if rear is original, car has 3.23 gears currently, ring seems to measure 8.2". apparently i can have 2 different 10 bolts that are 8.2", one is corporate and one is bop and the gears are different between the 2. here is a link http://www.crankshaftcoalition.com/wiki/Rearend_identification

link didn't work!! incidentally, i'd like to put 3.73 gears in it, am i wasting my time and should find a 10 bolt out of a chevelle? this rear has a brand new powertrax unit in it. i guess a better way to put it, is this a good rear axle from a performance standpoint? car is a stick, i'll probably run drag radials and i'm wondering if this is a good way for me to go. i know alot of people have run fast w/ the gm 10 bolt 8.5", and i'm curious if this rear is as good.

+1 Steve. That looks like the BOP 8.2".. From a performance standpoint, I'd look for an 8.5" or even a 12 bolt.

I fixed the link, so now it works.,. The 8.5 is only 3/8" smaller than the 12 bolt. I'd go with the 8.5, if it's available to you.

i'd have to find one, but it seems like there out there. its a shame because this already has a powertrax in it, along w/ new brakes

Just my 2 cents, but I would buy the 3:73 gears and put them in with the good stuff you already have and drive the (fire) out of it! Unless you're pushing 600 hp out the back door, I wouldn't worry about it. You will probably have years of enjoyment out of it with no problems. Drive it 'till it dies, then find an 8.5!

Yes! The carrier changes when you go from 3.23 to 3.36.

i ended up buying a 12 bolt out of a chevelle, 2.73 posi, so i'll have to do a gear change, if memory serves correct they make a 3.73 gearset to go on the 2 series carrier
