I am restoring a 71 Firebird Esprit. Not sure whether I should restore it to an Esprit or change it to a Formula? It did not come with an engine and I bought a 75 Pontiac 350. It has a 4bbl Edelbrock carb and intake manifold. It also has headers. It has 4x heads. I obviously want to increase the torque and hp but I am not a speed demon and just want good pep. 300-350 would be plenty. I was thinking of putting some new heads 11, 17, 18, 47, and 94. I was also going to put a Lunati cam in it as well. I have read a lot but am still a novice at selecting parts that will work with one another? The engine has good compression and runs great so with the very mild build was not sure I should rebuild it? I would probably have to change the pistons to aftermarket or earlier version to increase compression?I figured I would research and ask people like yourselves before I started to sink money into the engine. Thanks for any help.
i would not add hp to an old eng with orig oem cast pistons. thats like giving an out of shape 70 year old steroids and telling him to run as fast as he can.if you want good bottom and mid you absolutely positively need to change gears if you have something like 280 or 300. 323 - 343 are good for mild perf and long drives on the fwy 65 mph max.get flat top hyperutectic pistonsheads that give you around 9.7 static compression.holley square bore street avenger 670 cfm vacuum secondary annular boost venturi carb.comp xe262h or 265deh cam or similar lunati.no comp lifters.elgin or crane etc.full roller scorpion rockers.pocket port heads and back cut intake valvesscrew in rocker studs.moly plasma ringsbalance engine.ati damper.eddy intake, not sure which oneheads with intake valves smaller than 2.11look at rons pontiac page for head infowallace compression calculator.
