I have a 1967 Tempest Custom that has been in my family for around 40 years. My grandpa bought it years ago and it has been passed down ever since. My question is where can I find a breakdown of production numbers for this car, specifically one that will tell how many had the HO engine option? It came with the 326 HO engine I am sure. It has the 4 barrel carb, and dual exhaust. The sad part is the block froze and busted before my grandpa bought it. It was replaced with a 66 250HP running engine. The carb and intake are all that is left of the original. I have located a correct engine for the car,(YP) but the date stamp is 3 months after the car was built. Is it worth the money to restore to original or GTO clone it since the original engine is gone?
Since the matching engine castings are long gone, I would feel free to modify as desired.Tastefully modified cars or clones often bring more dollars than correct stockers these days, and the HO 326 was about as common as Hi-Po 289s in Mustangs if I recall correctly. There were quite a few, it was fairly popular. That is sad about the original block, but just keep going like Grandpa would have if you want to preserve the heritage. No reason you can't keep the engine thats in it, how many people will ever want to check if its the original one? I bet never.
