on the 80 trans am are the motor mounts in the right place to swap in the 400 big block?? my motor builder said they should be in the right place because the 301 is considered a big block ....is this true ?? i just want to make sure that the shaker will line up....HELP

+1 it will bolt right in ,but you will need to use the accessory brackets for the 400 as the 301 brackets are different.Also Pontiac never made a big or small block they where just specified by cubic inches.

Yes, the 301 is a short-deck motor so the shaker will sit higher on the 400, not an issue if the car had the turbo hood of course. I've heard of people using the 301 shaker if the motor mounts are soft. Not that I recommend it.

I'll assume you're running headers but if not the y-pipe & manifolds will also be a problem.
